Happy St. Patrick’s Day 2014!

photo

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, I opened a bottle of Brewery Ommegang’s Fire & Blood Red Ale, their newest Game of Thrones inspired beer.  While it’s not an irish style beer, the red ale got me my Untappd St. Patty’s Day 2014 badge.  The Fire & Blood Red Ale is, as all of Brewery Ommegang’s creations, a finely crafted brew.  Brewed with ancho chiles, it gives the brew a subtle kick in the end.  It will be available nationwide on March 31 – so look for it!  And look for my article on it in the April issue of the Mid-Atlantic Brewing News.

Cape Commons Brewing Company names Christian Ryan as Brewmaster

On February 23, 2014, the owners of Cape Commons Brewing Company – under development in Brooklyn, New York – announced that Christian Ryan will be joining them as their Brewmaster.  Christian is formerly the Head Brewer of Blue Point Brewing,  Assistant Brewer at Meantime Brewing Company, and Brewmaster at River Horse Brewing.  As a good friend of ours, we will be watching Christian and Cape Commons Brewing Company with much interest over the next few months!

AB Inbev to Purchase Blue Point Brewing Company

As reported in Business Insider, Anheuser-Busch Inbev will purchase Blue Point Brewing Company for $24 million in the early part of second quarter 2014.  I guess this means we’ll see Toasted Lager in a lot more bars across the country.  That’s pretty amazing since I’ve seen it recently as far south from Long Island as Hollywood, Florida.  Well, hopefully they won’t tinker with the recipe for Old Howling Bastard, their 10% barleywine, which I thought was outstanding.

Cheers!

Sunday Dinners at Forest & Main

Forest & Main Brewing Company, my “local,” hosts their “Sunday Dinners” every second Sunday of the month.  These dinners consist of a three course meal, prepared with in-season ingredients from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and paired with distinctive brews selected by the brewers, Dan and Gerard.  The meal is purposely limited to a small group – I believe the event was limited to 12 people this month. Tickets are first come, first served, and unfortunately for you, I just scored the last two tickets for January’s dinner, which is a real shame because I heard a rumor that dessert incorporates a special release blackberry stout.  If you don’t want to miss out in February, reserve your spot soon!

As the Beastie Boys once said, “Remember on your way home, if you’re drivin’, don’t drink.  And if you drink, don’t drive…”

Be safe and responsible with your craft brew exploration in 2014!
