Brewery Ommegang Releases Smoked Porter

Have you tried Brewery Ommegang’s Smoked Porter?  Looks like a perfect beer for the cooler weather….

Brewery Ommegang releases limited edition Smoked Porter to pair with the flavors of fall

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) As cooler weather settles in on the northeast, Brewery Ommegang is pleased to introduce their latest limited edition brew: Ommegang Smoked Porter. This nod to a traditional English beer is brewed with subtle additions of smoked malt and a touch of Saaz hops to add additional depth and character to an otherwise traditional English brew. While the style is a departure from Ommegang’s traditional Belgian-style beers, the characteristic aromas of chocolate malt along with caramelized sugar are reminiscent of many things Belgian, and of all things good. Smoked Porter is available now in limited quantities in four-packs and on draft while supplies last.

Smoked Porter is brewed with a carefully crafted blend of Pilsner, Special B, Munich 20, Cara-20, Midnight Wheat, chocolate malt, and smoked malt. Balanced hopping is achieved with Saaz, while fermentation with American ale yeast ensures the malt remains in the spotlight.

This 7.6% ABV beer pours a deep dark brown – almost black – with a thick tan head. Aromas of cocoa, burnt sugar, and roasted malt give way to subtle hints of smoke. The flavor follows the aroma with rich notes of cocoa and roasted malt, followed by caramel sweetness and mild smoke. A medium-full body leads to a well-rounded finish with lingering smoke on the backend.

Smoked Porter is a wonder accompaniment for a variety of foods. Pair smoke with smoke – and enjoy with smoked meats and cheeses. It’s also an ideal charcuterie beer, and a wonder pairing for rich confections like chocolate cheesecake.

Cheers!

Wait – is it 2017?

Apparently I enjoyed the holidays with my friends and family a bit too much – no activity on this website since November?  Tsk, tsk.  Well, if you haven’t been following along on Facebook or Instagram, here’s a short recap of what The Brewholder’s been up to:

Lazaris straight from the tank!

I visited Boneshire Brewworks – a few miles down the road from Troegs – before their grand opening and I liked what I tasted!  Read about my trip on Philly Beer Scene’s Online Exclusives

I checked out the new menu at The California Pizza Kitchen for Philly Beer Scene – that was a tasty visit!

Prism Brewing moved to Lansdale – here’s my article about it in Ticket.  It’s a great space with lots of potential!

My Elfs on the shelf – yum!

Christmas was helped along with several elfs on my shelfs – read about them in Ticket.

I recapped 2016 in the Beer Year in review article in Ticket

I announced my favorite new beer of the year – Braddock-Pennsylvania, based The Brew Gentlemen General Braddock Pale Ale.  I first ran into this brew at the Meeting of the Malts in March, and then again at the Craft Brewers Conference in May.  Needless to say, a road trip to Braddock in high on my list for 2017!

Goose Island “Sofie” and Karamoor wines during the Chrysos release event in December.

And today you can read about local winery Karamoor Estate’s collaboration with Goose Island Beer Company – “Chrysos” – essentially Goose Island‘s “Sofie” aged for 3 and a half months in Karamoor wine barrels.  Pretty cool that a small winery from the Philly area would be approached by a big brewery like Goose Island.  But don’t get your hopes up – most of the Chrysos is probably gone by this point – only about 4 beer barrels of the brew was made, and it is exclusively served at the Vetri restaurants.  We were told that they are going to keep a keg or two for future events, so keep your eyes open and maybe you’ll be able to try it….Philly Beer Week perhaps?

So now we’re all caught up.  But stayed tuned – 2017 looks to be another great beer year for me, with visits scheduled to Ft. Lauderdale (Funky Buddha, anyone?); St. Petersburg / Tampa, Florida (Cigar City, Angry Chair, Coppertail Brewing); Denver (Do I really need to drop names here?); and Seattle (mic drop)…

Cheers!

Victory Brewing’s Prima Pils Updated For Summer 2016

Prima Pils by the Pool!

Prima Pils by the Pool!

Victory Brewing recently refreshed its Prima Pils by updating the label with a classic look and putting it into a can for easy transport this summer.  According to a press release from Victory:

“With the decision to put Prima in cans, creating ‘portable Pils perfection,’ we decided to refresh the label, too,” said Victory’s co-founder and Brewmaster, Bill Covaleski.  “The liquid is the same as it’s been for 20 years but we wanted to brighten the label and boldly state what our loyal fans have been saying for decades: “PRIMA PILS PERFECTION SINCE 1996.”

Prima Pils on the go in the summer!

Prima Pils on the go in the summer!

I’ll be honest – it had been a long time since I’d had Prima Pils, but when I saw the new label (and needed cans vs. glass for poolside), I figured I’d circle back and try it again.  Let’s just say I’m hooked.   Prima Pils – in a can – is perfect for throwing in a cooler and taking with you on your summer excursions (or just to your backyard pool!)  My friends and I have already been through a few cases and it’s not even July yet!

If you haven’t had a Prima Pils in a while, try it again – I think it’s a perfect compliment to the heat of summer picnics and sitting on the beach.

Cheers!

The Brewholder 2014 Recap

On the verge of 2015, I wanted to take a quick look back at the great year that was 2014!  I met so many awesome craft brewers and their creations – locally, in the U.S., and around the globe –  Wow!

A summary of my 2014 highlights:

September – Beer in the desert – I was able to find out first hand about a craft beer oasis in Phoenix, Arizona!

For every issue of Philly Beer Scene this year I researched and wrote about the history of these outstanding Belgian breweries:  St. Bernardus, DuPont, De Koninck, Het Anker, De Halve Maan, and Van Steenberge.  Also, I had the opportunity to interview Jack Maxwell, the host of Travel Channel’s new show, “Booze Traveler.”

Prism Coffee Porter

Local highlights include the Forest & Main monthly Sunday dinners from January to August; The Band of Brewers; the Fifth Annual Lansdale Beer Festival; the Philly Beer Scene Awards in May – with Free Will’s Whit beer that aged nicely for Thanksgiving; a collaboration beer pairing dinner with the brewers at Iron Hill Chestnut Hill during Philly Beer Week; and a fantastic trip to McGillians to start the holiday season !

What a great year!  Thanks again to all my brew friends who helped make 2014 so awesome!

So what will 2015 bring for the Brewholder?  A few spoilers:  San Diego; Portland, Maine; Savannah; New Orleans; more Belgian history; at least one new Ommegang / Game of Thrones beer; and a relocation for The Brewholder HQ…Looks like 2015 is going to be another exciting beer year!

Cheers and Happy New Year!

The Perfect Summer Night

If you live around Philadelphia, tonight was one of those rare summer nights in late July and August when there was no humidity and the evening was actually perfect for sitting outside with your neighbors and sharing a brew.  As the sun set and a refreshing breeze blew in, I cracked open a Kona Big Wave – a golden ale that had a nice touch of the tropics – courtesy of the hops.

As more neighbors came outside to enjoy the rare weather, an impromptu block party began, and I moved on to an Evolution Lot No. 3 IPA, which also has an outstanding tropical fruit aroma perfect for the evening.  But of course, as the evening progressed our hometown hero, Dirt Wolf from Victory, came prowling out of the darkness.

Evenings like this should not be overlooked.  As I’ve said before, while we celebrate beer in and of itself, when we share it in the perfect conditions with others, beer reaches it’s full potential.

Cheers!
