Philly Beer Week is coming – and a new Lager from Sly Fox

Philly Beer Week starts this Thursday night with opening tap!   And Sly Fox has just announced that it has created a new lager that will be released for the occasion- the press release is below.

Hope to see you out and about during Philly Beer Week!

SLY FOX TO DEBUT NORTHERN LIBERTIES STANDARD LAGER
The beer is a collaboration between Brewmaster Brian O’Reilly, Standard Tap’s William Reed and fourth-generation brewer Bill Moeller, who worked at Philly’s historic Ortlieb’s and Schmidt’s breweries and developed the original recipe for modern classic Brooklyn Lager

On Thursday, June 1 at approximately 5:27 p.m. beer lovers following the Philly Beer Week Hammer of Glory (HOG) Relay are in for an extra-special treat: when the official keg hammer reaches Standard Tap, it will be used for a ceremonial first tapping of Northern Liberties Standard Lager. Brewed collaboratively by Sly Fox Brewing Company, Standard Tap owner William Reed and 91-year-old Bill Moeller, this extraordinary lager puts Moeller’s encyclopedic knowledge of beer as a fourth-generation brewer and brewing consultant on historic display on what is sure to be an instant classic in Philadelphia’s thriving beer scene. Standard Tap (901 North 2nd Street) will also host a debut brunch for Northern Liberties Standard Lager on Sunday, June 4 starting at 11 a.m. with O’Reilly, Reed and Moeller leading a meet-and-greet at 12 noon.

“Researching and brewing this beer with Bill has been an amazing opportunity, reminding me how much I still have to learn,” says O’Reilly. “Bill was brewing for 28 years in iconic Philadelphia breweries such as Ortlieb’s and Schmidt’s, at a time before home brewing was even legal in the United States. It’s a real honor to debut this collaborative brew with a true living legend – a man who helped put the Northern Liberties neighborhood on the beer map – during the 10th anniversary of Philly Beer Week.”

The inspiration for Northern Liberties Standard Lager struck when O’Reilly, Reed and Moeller were scrolling through Bills’ father’s malting and brewing notebook and discovered a lager recipe, dated February 6, 1920. At 5.8% ABV, the beer is very drinkable and fresh, brewed with German Two-Row, Caramel and Munich malts, and hopped with Cascade and Hallertau hops. They also used kräusening, a process that Bill requested, wherein about 10% young, still-fermenting beer is added to the aging beer, creating a secondary fermentation that adds flavor and carbonates the beer naturally.

“The long lager-ing period of near freezing temperatures is essential, as it smooths out the beer and rids it of rough-tasting tannins,” says Moeller. “I believe that kräusening produces beautiful complexity in a lager beer, and I was thrilled that Brian and Will were up for it. This is a beer with hair on its chest!”

Per Bill’s orders, a real lager must adhere to a “low and slow” fermentation process and age for at least six weeks. The final product is medium-firm bodied, with deep copper color, complex malty nose and balanced, brassy malt-hop finish. Northern Liberties Standard Lager is the latest installment in an ongoing series of collaboration beers started in 2008 between Sly Fox and Standard Tap and will be available at Standard Tap, Johnny Brenda’s (also owned by Reed) and at Sly Fox locations in Pottstown, PA and Phoenixville, PA.

“Reading Bill’s father’s meticulous hand-written notes made the family’s lengthy brewing tradition really come alive, and it’s very exciting to be able to pour the fruits of so much effort and history,” says Reed. “Fittingly, Northern Liberties Standard Lager will debut just a half-block from where lager brewing began in America.”

Moeller is a fourth-generation brewmaster and World War II veteran who has spent 67 years in the beer industry, tracing his brewing roots back to his paternal great grandfather, an accomplished brewer in his native Germany. Moeller started his own brewing career at Drewry’s in South Bend, Indiana and estimated that his family alone – his paternal great grandfather, grandfather, father, two uncles and Bill himself – have collectively produced about 110 million barrels of beer in America, including Bill himself concocting the original recipe for Brooklyn Lager, the same award-winning beer made today by Brooklyn Brewery. His beers have won critical acclaim both internationally and in the United States, including awards at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) and at the International Institute for Quality in Belgium.

“When I approached my father about getting into the family business, he told me, ‘You are going to do it the right way, the traditional German way – or you are not going to do it,’” says Moeller, who also formulated the original recipe for Dock Street’s Bohemian Pilsner. “Lagers and pilsners are difficult beers to make because it is very hard to cover up any mistakes.”

Iron Hill to open Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Location

Iron Hill announced that it will open a new location in Rehoboth Beach, in their home state of Delaware.   They anticipate opening in time for Summer 2018!  Here’s the press release:

IRON HILL TO OPEN IN REHOBOTH BEACH:
THEIR THIRD LOCATION IN THEIR
HOME STATE OF DELAWARE
The beloved local brewery and restaurant group will open Iron Hill Rehoboth Beach,
marking the company’s long-anticipated expansion into Southern Delaware

Founders Kevin Finn, Mark Edelson and Kevin Davies are thrilled to announce that Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, the Mid-Atlantic region’s most-awarded and fastest-growing collection of brewpubs will open in Summer 2018 at 19791 Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach, just south of Tanger Outlets Rehoboth Beach. This will be the third Delaware location for the Wilmington-based company, and their 14th planned location on the East Coast. Since opening their original brewery and restaurant in Newark, DE in 1996, Iron Hill has remained dedicated to producing from-scratch food and hand-crafted beers in a warm and hospitable setting. Their 2016 equity investment from A&M Capital Opportunities positioned them to continue their plan for careful growth, with more brewer-driven locations expected to open over the next several years.

Finn, Edelson and Davies are viewed as innovative business leaders in their home state of Delaware and in the Mid-Atlantic region. They started Iron Hill at a time when small breweries were just beginning to gain mass appeal around the country and their forward-thinking concept – each individual location has their own head brewer – helped change overall perceptions about brewpubs. Delaware has seen a significant craft brewing boom in recent years and Iron Hill’s long-standing popularity among locals helped lead to the state tourism agency’s development of the Visit Delaware Beer, Wine and Spirits Trail in 2010. Iron Hill Rehoboth Beach will join fellow craft beer pioneer Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and six other breweries operating in Southern Delaware, one of the trendiest destinations for craft beer in the United States.

“As we continue to grow, we also wanted to deepen our commitment to our Delaware roots,” says President and Co-Founder Kevin Finn. “Our guests have long asked for us to open a location at the beach, and we are excited to join the thriving restaurant and brewing community in Rehoboth.”

Iron Hill has been widely recognized for their hands-on approach and ongoing charitable endeavors in the communities they serve, especially in Wilmington and Newark. Since 2005, the company has donated more than $260,000 to CureSearch for Children’s Cancer throughout the region, helped raise over $230,000 to support efforts of the Food Bank of Delaware in the past three years and given back over $70,000 in additional support to various charitable partners across Delaware alone over the past decade, including: Water is Life Kenya, UDance, Grand Opera House and Variety – The Children’s Charity.

Named after the historic Revolutionary War landmark in Delaware, where General George Washington battled the British, Iron Hill is among the most enduringly successful craft brewers in the United States. Their 20-year consecutive winning streak at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) includes 45 total medals and is the longest by a craft brewery in GABF history. Iron Hill has also earned the coveted “World Champion Brewpub” title at the World Beer Cup (WBC) three times and Brewpub of the Year title at GABF once.

“We are excited to have one of the best restaurants in the Mid-Atlantic region join Coastal Station,” said Developer Todd Bariglio, who will begin construction on Coastal Station in June. “Coastal Station will be Delaware’s most premier real estate development and we couldn’t have asked for a better tenant than Iron Hill.”

Iron Hill Rehoboth Beach will reflect the same open and family-friendly atmosphere found inside all of their popular locations in the region. The menu will highlight their original chef-driven and brewery-inspired philosophy, with gentle nods to seasonal beers and regional ingredients, including their Gold Medal Stout dessert, an educational partnership with the University of Delaware that combines hand-churned chocolate ice cream with Iron Hill’s gold-medal-winning Russian Imperial Stout.

“We are very proud of our award-winning beers, but it is pairing these fine products with the creativity of our chefs that keeps guests coming back,” says Finn. “Whether it is using spent grain or malted barley spice in our from-scratch recipes, Iron Hill is committed to bringing out the best in beer and food.”

Cheers!

The Philly Beer Evolution

Recently I had the amazing opportunity to interview  some pretty significant people in the Philly Beer writing community – Lew Bryson, George Hummel and Don Russell.  You can check out my article in the most recent issue of Philly Beer Scene.

The stories that Lew, George and Don all shared were fantastic and gave me some insight into how they all became Beer fanatatics – so fanatic that they decided to write about the beer they were drinking!  Now that is passion!

As a “new” beer writer, I really appreciated the  opportunity for this assignment and wanted to thank Lew, George and Don for taking the time to share their thoughts with me!

Meanwhile, it got me thinking about my start in beer writing – and you can read it here.   Special thanks to Mat Falco for the support over the years!

Cheers!

Almost Everything You Need To Know for Philly Beer Week 2017

It’s coming!  The 10th anniversary of Philly Beer Week is coming soon, and here’s the press release with a whole slew of info!  Go to their site for more info and links:

The nation’s first, biggest and best Beer Week – with nearly 100 copycats worldwide – will celebrate their 10th anniversary in 2017, kicking off with Opening Tap on June 1

Philly Beer Week (PBW) will celebrate their 10th year on Thursday, June 1 starting with the Hammer of Glory (HOG) Relay which leads up to Opening Tap, their signature kick-off party featuring more than 40 breweries, at The Fillmore Philadelphia. Opening Tap will be followed by PBW2017 (Friday, June 2 through Sunday, June 11), 10 days of lively beer-soaked events in America’s Best Beer-Drinking City™. Hosted by 501(c)(6) non-profit Philly Loves Beer (PLB), PBW2017 is the culmination of 10 years and nearly 10,000 events, and remains the 10 most important days on Philadelphia’s beer calendar.

PBW stands alone as the largest beer celebration of its kind in the United States. The 10-day festival (seven days weren’t enough for America’s Best Beer-Drinking City™, a name trademarked in 2012) features hundreds of dinners, tours, pub crawls, tastings and meet-the-brewer nights, and highlights the region’s top-notch breweries, neighborhood taverns, trend-setting restaurants and masterful home brewers. PBW is the “Founding Father” of Beer Weeks, and continues to evolve and grow amid a crowded field of friendly imitators, with 77 Beer Weeks held annually in the United States, and almost 100 worldwide.

“Looking back at 10 years, I have to admit Philly Beer Week has exploded beyond my wildest expectations,” says Tom Peters, PBW Co-Founder and Proprietor of Monk’s Cafe. “The first year I remember saying I’d be really happy if we had 20 participants and 30 events. Now, there are Beer Weeks all over the world and we are proud Philadelphia once again was leading the charge. It’s been a remarkable ride and stunning achievement!”

Opening Tap

Opening Tap is PBW’s marquee event, bringing the entire craft beer community together for a solemn “first tapping” of the festival – followed by a high energy party with endless samples. A highly-anticipated night, Opening Tap features rare and limited pours from 40+ breweries and live entertainment.
In addition, PLB will present The Orchard at Opening Tap where guests will have the opportunity to sample the country’s best ciders and chat with cider makers. Hard ciders have been gaining popularity in recent years, thanks to new fermenting methods, including the use of big, bold hops and dry hopping. Entry into The Orchard is included in both VIP and General Admission.

Opening Tap will take place on a Thursday night, June 1, from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. (click for tickets):

· General Admission: $46 includes a souvenir glass + complimentary beers from 40+ local and national breweries in 4-oz. tastings, including the debut of Gravity Never Fails, a collaboration porter brewed with experimental hops created by 2SP Brewing in Aston, PA and Brouwerij De Ranke in Belgium
· VIP Admission: $92 includes an additional hour of access, beginning at 6 p.m., plus a buffet dinner from US Foods and sponsor RCCB Law
· Designated Driver Admission: $15

Leading Up to Opening Tap: The Hammer of Glory and HOG Relay
The official mascot of PBW, the Hammer of Glory (HOG) is a custom, hand-forged keg hammer that travels throughout the region and across the United States as an ambassador for Philadelphia beer throughout the year. Starting in the wee hours of the morning on Thursday, June 1 the HOG will be passed Olympic torch-style from venue to venue along the HOG Relay, a day-long, beer-fueled carnival that visits 40 bars, breweries and restaurants across the city. Conveyances have included a festive mix of the weirdly absurd (ziplining from atop Standard Tap, for example, or escorting the HOG to Yards Brewing in a DeLorean) and insanely practical (ascending 51 floors to take in the majestic views from SkyGarten, then leading a cavalcade of motorcycles at TIME). This year’s HOG Relay schedule and means of transport will be announced at a later date. The HOG Relay will conclude with the HOG’s arrival at Opening Tap for the ceremonial first tap of PBW2017: the newly nickel-plated keg mallet will strike a firkin of Brotherly Suds, a collaboration beer from local breweries Tröegs, Victory, Yards, Sly Fox, Stoudt’s, Iron Hill and Flying Fish.

PBW: The History
A casual conversation between friends Tom Peters and Bruce Nichols in the comfortable back bar at Monk’s Café grew into PBW, a 10-day celebration of beer culture in Philadelphia. Peters was quickly earning a national reputation as the “Godfather of Belgian Beer” for introducing interesting beers and new brewers to a novice U.S. audience; and Nichols (affectionately known as the “Great Gatekeeper of Philadelphia Beer”) was already establishing the city as a craft beer destination by hosting beer dinners and tasting events with famed British beer writer Michael Jackson. Ten years later, their pioneering efforts have accounted for thousands of beer-savvy consumers flocking to Philadelphia every June to seek out rare collaborations and one-of-a-kind events.

Executive Director Kristine Kennedy, President William Reed and Co-Founder and Counsel Tom Peters will lead the festivities in 2017. Their energy and passion maintains the tremendous pace set by former Executive Director and Co-Founder Don Russell, a noted author and beer columnist (“Joe Sixpack”). The annual festival has grown from a local gathering to a national powerhouse run by PLB, a group of dedicated beer insiders, tavern owners, world-class brewers, wholesalers and distributors, and top hospitality professionals. PLB’s capable Board of Directors includes: William Reed, Casey Parker, Curt Decker, Andy Dickerson, Matt Satten, Sheila Ballen, Christina Dowd, Terrance Leach, Mike Scotese, Erin Wallace, Alex Bokulich, Adrienne Renzelli, Ed Friedland, Tom Kehoe, John Stemler, Aaron Peskin and Tim Patton.

PBW2017: 10th Anniversary Happenings

In celebration of PBW’s milestone 10th Anniversary, organizers will announce a slew of special events, one-off collaborations and rare tappings, including:

· Art on Beer: On Tuesday, June 6 starting at 7 p.m., Frankford Hall will host a panel discussion on artwork and beer labels featuring Lindsey Tweed (Tröegs), John Trogner (Tröegs), Keith Shore (Mikkeller), JP Flexner (Neshaminy Creek), moderated by Jason Kernovich of The Heads of State, the design firm behind Philly Loves Beer’s branding. Tickets are $30 (including a pint of beer) and will go on sale in the coming weeks.
· “Gravity Never Fails” Luncheon: On Monday, June 5 at 12 noon, Monk’s Café will host a meet-and-greet with Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos (De Ranke) and Bob Barrar (2SP Brewing) to taste and talk about their Philly-Belgo collaboration. This special beer was made possible due to the fundraising efforts of PBW’s annual European Vacation, an all-expenses-paid raffle trip to Belgium for one lucky beer lover and their favorite local brewer (won by 2SP for 2017), organized and funded by PLB. The three world-class brewers will convene again on Tuesday, June 6 for a Brew Day at 2SP in Aston, PA to rekindle their European magic on an American version of the collaboration beer.
· Philly Loves Beer Garden: During every night (except Wednesday; including weekends) of PBW2017, Uptown Beer Garden (1735 Market Street) will host the official Philly Loves Beer Garden, with special attention devoted to breweries located within 100 miles of downtown Philadelphia. On Saturday, June 3, Jolly Pumpkin and Coppertail Brewing will headline the Uptown Luau BBQ, a sour beer extravaganza with a Hawaiian-inspired theme and live entertainment from a solo ukulele singer. The event will feature a whole-roasted suckling pig and Spam sculpture, along with plenty of fruit-forward beers and tropical collaborations, including Sobrehumano Palena’ole.

PBW2017: 10th Anniversary Greatest Hits

In addition, PBW will also celebrate the return of long-established and much-anticipated favorites:

Sly Fox to Celebrate Earth Day with Spreekend!

Spring has sprung! Time again for beer outside! Photo by Matt Brasch

Wow!  If this weather doesn’t get you stoked for Spring and Summer, I don’t know what will!  And if you want to celebrate the change of seasons and give back at the same time, Sly Fox is celebrating Earth Day on April 22!  Here’s the press release:

The brewery is committed to caring for its community, and to celebrate Earth Day,
they will release a beer benefiting the Schuylkill River Trail and host a fun launch party

On Saturday, April 22, Sly Fox Brewing Company will celebrate Earth Day with the annual debut of SRT Ale, an American Pale Ale benefiting the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT). SRT Ale is a golden, hop-forward sessionable ale that, at 4.6% ABV, is perfect to drink after traversing its namesake, the SRT. From 2 p.m. until 8 p.m., the outdoor enthusiasts at Sly Fox will take-over St. Michael’s Park in Mont Clare, PA for their third-annual SRT Spree, featuring live performances by roots rock bands Chestnut Grove and Frog Holler, along with fresh food from the Sunflower Food Truck and Uncle B’s BBQ. The festive party will pay tribute to the serene beauty of the SRT, while raising awareness for environmental issues and preserving Pennsylvania’s natural resources.

“As we like to say, Earth is the only planet that has beer – so we’ll do whatever we can to protect it,” says Brewmaster Brian O’Reilly. “SRT Ale and our annual Earth Day SRT clean-up efforts are our way to give back to the community that we love and preserve our beautiful outdoor spaces for future generations. We work with earthen ingredients every day when we brew our approachable ales and lagers, so we know first-hand how important it is to support local environmental organizations and government works projects.”

The SRT is a 130-mile walking and biking trail that runs from Philadelphia north and west to Pottsville, PA, and is a work in progress; to support its construction and maintenance, Sly Fox will donate $1 from every case of SRT Ale sold to the Schuylkill River Heritage Area (SRHA). In addition, they will share 50% of the Spree’s proceeds with the Schuylkill Canal Association (SCA). SRT Spree is the kick-off to a five-month initiative starting on April 22 and ending on September 30 at Sly Fox’s popular Can Jam Music Festival in Pottstown, PA where the annual donation is presented on stage.

Since 2014, almost $9,000 has been donated to the SRHA for trail maintenance, improvement and advocacy; last year, the brewery raised $4,711 through the sale of SRT Ale. Sly Fox owner John Giannopoulos was recently honored with the Schuylkill River Legacy Award for his charitable and philanthropic endeavors during the 2nd Annual Evening for the Schuylkill River.

“The Sly Fox partnership bolsters our efforts to encourage recreation, build and improve the SRT and engage new audiences in our events,” said Tim Fenchel, SRHA Interim Executive Director. “We are proud to recognize Sly Fox for their meaningful contribution.”

To celebrate the launch of SRT Ale, Sly Fox will coordinate a weekend-long “SRT Spree,” inviting fans to kayak, cycle, run, hike or walk the trail and help roving clean-up groups, as well as the 50K Schuylkill River Relay. Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to register for any of the events; however, participation is NOT required, and guests are encouraged to come drink great Sly Fox beers and enjoy the party at St. Michael’s Park.
